How & Why Winners Keep Winning

Jul 07, 2024

I've always wondered why and how winners keep winning.

From football teams to musicians to creators.

Manchester United had their period.

Manchester City are currently having theirs.

As long side Real Madrid.

It's called the winner's effect.

In simple terms, winners are more likely to continue to win, and losers are likely to continue to lose.

But I needed to know HOW and WHY, and this is when I found the 6 principles that cause this.

Principle 1: Acknowledge and count your wins.

A lot of the time we don't even ourselves enough credit.

And this is why we feel like we are never winners.

And if we never win, how could we ever continue winning?

So look around, become more present, and count all your wins, big or small.

Principle 2: Reward your efforts first, not the results.

Sometimes it takes longer for a result to come in, and depending on that can put you at a huge advantage.

In whatever industry you're in, there are smaller tasks that lead to a big task being completed.

e.g. social media growth could be the result and the big task we want to complete.

But if we stay focused on that, we won't feel any progress, and possibly end up quitting.

It's the same for football too (I love football).

Matches are 90 minutes long.

Team 1 puts in 20 shots

And Team 2 puts in 1 shot.

Who's more likely to win?

Team 1. They put in the shots. The shots were the 'effort' winning the game is the result.

Principle 3: Count and stack your easy wins to build momentum.

Big wins won't come every day.

You need to build your momentum by counting your easy wins.

Easy wins you could count in your day-to-day:

  • Waking up

  • Eating food

  • Making your bed

  • Brushing your teeth

  • Exercising

  • Getting 8 hours of sleep

  • Writing a video and a script.

  • Posting a tweet.

I'm sure you get the point.

It doesn't have to be a crazy client testimonial.

Principle 4: Do what you say you’re going to do to build self-trust

Just like you wouldn't let your best friend or family down.

You need to hold yourself to the same standard.

If you told your best friend you'll be at the gym at 8 am.

9/10 you'll be there.

If you told yourself that you're going to the gym at 8 am.

It's a lot easier to make up a random excuse because you're not letting anyone down.

But the big mistake is.

You are.

Your brain is now in the state of... "okay, he doesn't take himself seriously. We can get away with being lazy, and unproductive"

Principle 5: Manage your expectation

I'm all for setting high goals, and I think you still should.

But learn to manage your expectations.

If you thought a video was going to go viral, and it didn't.

Don't feel like you lost.

That video could have done a lot more than you realise.

It could have:

  • Got you more clients

  • A very good binge bank of content

  • Made you more likeable than before

It's not always a loss, you just need to change your perspective.

Principle 6: Visualisation

Personally, I've been told about visualising for so long.

Even footballers use this technique before football matches.

And you can do the same for your life, or business.

Visualising will help you solidify the idea or belief in your mind.

The more repetition you do of something the more it's engrained into the subconscious mind.

And the subconscious mind is the reason your reality is the way it is right now.
